How to Choose Between Plastic and Metal for Your Prototype
Most projects come down to three questions: how the part will be tested, how many surface-finish options it needs, and how fast you need it in hand.
Mechanical load & wear
For gears, bushings, and sliding parts, POM, MC Nylon, or PTFE (plastics) and aluminum or stainless steel (metals) hold up best under repeated motion and load.
Heat & chemical exposure
PEEK, PTFE, and stainless steel tolerate higher temperatures and chemical contact than standard ABS or PC — relevant for automotive, EV, and medical device testing.
Cosmetic finish & speed
ABS, PC, and PMMA/Acrylic take paint, polish, and laser engraving well and machine quickly — a good fit for consumer electronics mockups on a tight timeline.
Every project moves through the same process regardless of material: SLA prototyping (1–3 days) for early form checks, CNC machining (3–7 days) for functional and cosmetic parts, vacuum casting (5–10 days) for small batches, and injection molding (4–8 weeks) once the design is locked for production.
